Frequently Asked Questions
How much will it cost to complete my project?
If you have a set of plans and are looking for an estimate, we would be
happy to give you an estimate based on those plans. But if you're like
most people, you don't have a set of plans yet from a draftsperson or
an architect listing detailed product selections before you've started
looking for a contractor. If this is the case, we can offer you a very
general price estimate based on some of our past projects. Then later,
once all of the plans and design work are completed, we can present
you with a comprehensive contract stating the total price.

What about "square foot pricing?"  Is that accurate?
Without knowing what all of the components are, an estimated square
foot price can be pretty far off of what the actual final estimate and
actual cost will be. This is important to keep in mind when talking to
different contractors. Just because one contractor's ballpark
"guesstimate" is lower than another's doesn't mean they can actually
complete the project at a lower cost. The truth is this: without all the
facts, a "square foot estimate" isn't a very good way to pick a contractor.

How do I pick a contractor?
It is important that your budget is discussed at the first meeting so you
can find out if your project goals are in line with what you plan on
spending. This is also the time when both the contractor and the
homeowner see if there is a good fit or synergy between them. We
recommend talking to several reputable firms and then picking one to
work with whom you feel is the best fit with your situation.  Often a
friend, neighbor, or relative has had experience with a local contractor,
and can tell you if they had a good experience or a negative one.

Why should I select Garrett Construction?
We will take the time and effort to work through all of the possibilities
and come up with a plan that is right for you. Whether your tastes are
simple or sophisticated, your budget modest or not so modest, our
goal is to give you products and services that translate your dreams
into reality.  We have been in the remodeling business in Iowa City
since 1989.
Remodeling is not a sideline for us.  It's all we do.

Will I be able to live in my home while you are working on it?
In the case of whole house remodeling or renovation, the water, sewer,
electrical, and heating/cooling systems are all impacted. In a project of
this size it may be advisable to move out for a period of time. In general
for additions and any other remodeling probably not.

How long will my project take?
A complete bathroom remodel that leaves fixtures in their original
location usually will take 3 to 4 weeks. A more extensive bathroom or
kitchen is around six weeks. Windows and doors can usually be
completed in a day or two. An addition can run from 3 months and up
depending on the size and complexity.

When can you give me a price on my project?
Once we are picked to do the job and all of the plans and design work
are completed, we will present you with a comprehensive contract
stating the total price and payment schedule. Our payment schedule is
based on the progress of your project so we don't get a payment until
we have reached that milestone.  We'll also include a specifications
page with materials, finishes, and model numbers of all products and
appliances going into your project.
